Panthers Drop Second Straight
Posted by: wildairraid on 2010-07-09

The Carolina Panthers travelled up to Chicago to face Jay Cutler and the High-Flying Bears Offense and lost the game 27-10.

The main goal the Panthers had going into the game was to contain the offense that spotted 42 points against the Saints in Week 1, and 36 Points against the Vikings in Week 2.

Despite the score, the Panthers actually accomplished that goal. Jay Cutler threw for over 300 yards each in his first two games and 7 TDs. This game? The Panther defense held him to under 150 yards passing and 1 TD. Cutler also turned in his first passer rating under 100 at 77.

The rush defense? Until the Bears started to run the clock and were ahead 27-10, the Panthers held Matt Forte to under 50 yards through 18 minutes of the game and under 3 yards a carry.

If the Panthers defense held together so well, why did they let 27 points score against them? Well, the first Bears TD was a Kickoff return, the last was an interception return.

So, in reality, the high flying Bears offense that posted 42 and 36 points by themselves in the first two weeks managed 13 against the Panthers, who helped the Bears get 6 of those 13 points through their 4 turnovers.

If the Panthers Kick Return Defense had played tight on Hester and the Panther Offense hadn't committed so many turnovers, the defense would have been able to hold the Bears to 7 points.

When GM WildAirRaid was asked why this did not happen, he simply cited one stat line, "Jonathan Stewart - 11 Carries 113 yards. That was our problem right there. The 11 carries. It is unexcusable to get a back average over 10 YPC and only give him the ball 11 times while asking our rookie QB to throw 28 passes. I take blame for the horrible offensive strategy entirely. This will not happen again. Pike is a rookie and we will rely on Smash and Dash to pick up the yards in do-or-die situations."

A 1-2 start may seem bad for many teams, but the Panthers, not so much. They are currently half a game behind the divison leader Falcons, who they face next week. A win here will give them the early divison lead with a 2-2 record by half a game.

A BIG game coming up in ATL next week for the Panthers who look to get back to the power running game to take the pressure off of Tony Pike.
