Packers Best Panthers in Overtime
Posted by: wildairraid on 2010-07-02
The Green Bay Packers defeated the Carolina Panthers in Overtime 41-35 in Green Bay.
The Game started with the Panthers getting the ball and driving down into the redzone, only to claim a field goal for the 3-0 lead.
The Packers bounced back easily and hit a long bomb from Rodgers to Jennings on the second play from scrimmage for the 7-3 lead.
The Panthers responded, driving the field on their second possession for a Jonathan Stewart TD for the 10-7 lead.
Packers topped the first quarter in the closing seconds with a Lynch TD for the 14-10 lead.
The Panthers seemed to drop into a shell in the second quarter, getting behind to the Packers 21-10 before Steve Smith caught his first TD of the season from rookie QB Tony Pike to make the score 17-21.
The Packers added another TD on top of that to take the lead into halftime 28-17.
The Panthers were down by 11 and had committed two lost fumbles in the first half, compared to the Packers 0 turnovers.
The Panthers kicked to the Packers to open the third, and the Packers, if they scored a TD on this drive, had an excellent chance to put the game away by going up by 18 points. However, Rey Maualuga had different ideas about this and picked the Packers off on the 35 Yard line.
A FG was added on a 3 and out possession to cut the lead to 28-20.
Another defensive stop was made by the Panthers in the third quarter, and Tony Pike hit Jason Dunn for Pike's second TD of the game.
Pike snuck the two point conversion in against the Linebacker Spy and tied the game at 28 all.
The Packers then took in another TD before the end of the third quarter to lead into the 4th 35-28.
In the fourth quarter both teams played small ball with no deep passes or desperation plays. The Panthers put up a Jonathan Stewart TD to give them a Tie Game early in the quarter.
The Packers went into driving mode, and Rodgers was on the Panther 40 when he threw his second interception of the day to Charles Godfrey.
With three minutes left, the Panther had erased an 11 point halftime deficit and were 50 yard from FG range.
Pike moved the chains once and then the Packers forced a punt. The punt was horrible and traveled only to the Packer 45.
The Packers moved the ball into FG range, ran the clock down to :03 seconds, then kicked the ball. The Kick was good, but an offensive lineman was caught holding on the kick, so the game went into overtime.
The Panthers recieved the opening kick, and had a chance to put away a game that they should have lost.
Booker took the kick back to the 40 yard line, giving the Panthers excellent position. But a 3 and out was forced and the Packers got the ball. The Packers moved the ball into the edge of FG range, and the Panthers started getting agressive, planning to sack Rodgers outside of range.
Rodgers then hit Lynch with a gamewinning TD to lock up a game that the Packers should have won in the fourth.
A great game to Long, this was one of the most unique games I have ever played in.
Tony Pike is looking good as a Rookie QB, and has a 144 passer rating through two weeks, throwing for just under 500 yards and 5 TDs with no interceptions.
This leaves the Panthers at 1-1, a half game behind the Falcons in the NFC South Division.
Next week the Panthers travel to Chicago, on their extended 7 week road trip to open the season, to take on the leading TD Passer, Jay Cutler.
