Panthers Acquire Chad Pennington
Posted by: wildairraid on 2010-06-26
Chad Pennington has bounced around this offseason, and will be with his third team to start week 2.
There is much speculation on what this will do to Tony Pike, who by the time Pennington arrives will have one game under his belt. GM WildAirRaid seems to act like this trade was just a depth move, stating that "Tony Pike is still our starter."
Various players on the Panthers seem to believe that Pennington, another small-school quarterback who had high expectations placed on him as a rookie, was brought in to tutor and mentor Tony Pike for 2 years as he works on his mechanics and defensive reads. Pennington also will be available in case Pike gets overwhelmed in a game and needs to come out.
GM WildAirRaid has an interesting take on that, "You always want to get a rookie in to see what he can do. A player, a rookie player, improves the most when he plays good at the start of his career. However, that only works if he does good. If your rookie QB is in th game getting knocked down every other play and not completing throws his confidence will suffer. He will become scared. He will become the next David Carr. We don't want Tony to regress into a shell so we wanted insurance for the moments when playing might be too much for him. In other words,
We want to put Pike on the fire and grill him this season, but we don't want him to EVER fall through the slats into the flames themselves.
Will we see Pennington in certain sets? Probably so. I Know Culpepper gets in in one or two sets, I can't see Pennington not getting his own sets also. But this isn't to take away from Pike. It is to confuse the defense and bring a change-up to the game."
