Panthers Announce Starting QB
Posted by: wildairraid on 2010-06-24
Today the Carolina Panthers announced their starting lineups, and there seems to be no secrecy about any of the positions by GM WildAirRaid.
First announced was the Starting QB. This position was up in the air for the Panthers for much of the offseason, as they had 5 total quarterbacks in on the roster over the course. First, the Panthers moved away Jimmy Clausen. Clausen seemed to be a great value draft pick of the Panthers, but GM WildAirRaid seemed to feel that the value at QB was not needed, "Why did we need Clausen? Our other QBs are not old or injury prone and can handle the job just as well as he can." Clausen was moved, based on expectations entirely to the Bengals.
GM WildAirRaid announced that the Starting QB would be Tony Pike. WildAirRaid, "Pike came in as an under-the-radar player from Cincinatti (college). We picked him up in the 6th round for almost nothing and he has impressed us in training camp. Whether it was his 6'6" stature or his seeming poise (71 awr) for a rookie he has the tools to start in the NFL. He has continuously made throws under pressure in practice in triple coverage and I see no reason he can't do it in games."
Daunte Culpepper might just play a role in the QB position as well. GM WildAirRaid feels that "Anytime you have a player who has a cannon arm, weighs in at 260, is strong and can break tackles well you have to get him on the field. He can throw it deep past the defense to our two speedsters or he can run you over for a short game."
Culpepper seems to be a Wildcat QB for the Panthers this year. The question is, will Culpepper's use be detrimental to the team by breaking the offensive norm, or will he be good for the team, by breaking the defensive norm.
The Panthers are ready to face the Saint Louis Rams in Week 1.
This game will pit rookie QBs Tony Pike VS. Sam Bradford. Both teams have two great running backs and some fast recievers.
This game could easily come down to which Rookie QB can keep his cool the longest. Gm WildAirRaid, "I feel right now that Pike should have been the top pick in the draft. He has intangibles that the others lack. His polish isn't up with others, but he can improve his polish while the other QBs cannot improve their intangibles."
And intangibles Tony Pike seems to have. at 6'6" 223 lb with an overarm release, Pike has the height to never get a ball swatted at the line.
The Panthers wish the Rams a great week 1 game.
